MIM from A to Z: H is for Hair Care Essentials

Happy Wednesday, lovelies! We’re up to “H” in the Making it Millennial A to Z series – I hope y’all have been enjoying reading as much as I’ve been enjoying writing this series. Today is all about HAIR. It’s kinda crazy but how my hair looks can play such a significant role in how I FEEL about myself. Like, if I’m having a bad hair day, then it can instantly put me in a bad mood – I know I’m not the only one, either.

I consider myself pretty low maintenance with my haircare routine, and the products I use work really well for my thick, wavy, highlighted hair. On average, I put heat on it once a week; usually, I just shampoo and condition it every other day and then let it air dry in all of its thick, natural waviness.

You might be wondering, what does a girl with thick, wavy, highlighted hair use on her head? Today I’m sharing my hair care essentials that help me keep my mane looking and feeling good.

BUT! before I do that…I wanted to share about my new haircut. I have had a blunt a-line cut for a while now, and I love it, but it had grown out a bit, and I wanted to get it cleaned up. A friend from my skimm’bassador group had recommended creating a profile on Salon Apprentice, and I ended up getting a really fantastic haircut by a junior stylist ($300 value) for $30!

The Salon Apprentice service site is available in many large cities, I highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for an affordable haircut/color/highlights. The stylist took photos for her portfolio so I thought it would be fun to share my hair’s transformation below:

Okay, okay, okay –  back to today’s topic. Check out my favorite go-to hair care essentials below.

Hair products

My sister gave me the shampoo and conditioner that I’m currently using, Sexy Hair’s sulfate-free shampoo for colored hair. It has rose and almond oils in it and smells soo good. I really like how the conditioner moisturizes my hair (my hair is so hard to detangle, and this product works pretty well without having to use half the bottle in one use!). I’m also really smitten with Drybar’s hair products. I don’t wash my hair every day, so the dry shampoo is used all.the.time. My hot toddy heat protectant lasts me forever because I hardly put heat on my hair, but when I do, this product is GOLD. After I shower, I’ll put a little dime-size amount of the silk infusion oil onto the ends of my hair, which makes it feel silky smooth.

Hair tools

When I do want to “doll myself up” and blow-dry/curl my hair, bedhead products are where the party’s at. Both the blowdryer and curl rod are incredibly affordable and work wonders on my hair. Every single time I curl my hair using this curling rod, I got tons of compliments. I can’t recommend these two products enough. I’ve also had the HSI salon-grade flat iron for 3 years now, and it works so well: it heats up fast, comes with a nice fabric sleeve (I rest mine on it when getting ready), and doesn’t pull your hair out (that’s seriously a pet peeve of mine, when flat irons pull your hairs out, ouuuuch). After I curl my hair, I let it sit for about 30 minutes and then I use my round brush to brush out the curls, which makes the curls more of a wave instead of a curl, which is what I like.

Hair accessories

I have to admit, the days when I’m feeling most lazy with my hair and throw in a little accessory, I get so many compliments. Sometimes I’ll wear a bejeweled headband and pull my hair back into a low bun, and everyone at work will tell me how cute my hair looks (I’m usually laughing to myself on the inside). When I wear bobby pins, I like to use the metallic/shiny ones because I think it adds a nice touch to my hairstyle. Of course, I love wearing a headband when I work out, and one of my favorite ones is this thick Under Armour band that keeps all the sweat off your face.

Those are my go-to hair care essentials – what are yours?! Looking forward to getting some new hair product inspo from you guys.
