Did you know that 80% of countries, including the US, still allow animals to be used for cosmetic testing? After I read multiple animal testing articles, this blog post from Cruelty-Free Kitty, and saw this infographic from Humane Society International, I was horrified. In today’s day and age, animal testing for cosmetics isn’t necessary; other much more humane and cost-effective ways exist to test products. Knowing that, I made a commitment to myself that moving forward, I will exclusively buy cruelty-free cosmetic brands.
What brands are cruelty-free vs. not? Many cosmetic brands are cruelty-free, but typically not the major brands you see at Walgreens, for example. Cruelty-Free Kitty has an entire guide on cruelty-free brands (this website has been a tremendous resource in navigating these new cruelty-free waters).
Today, I’m highlighting the 8 brands that I’m using and hope that you will consider making the switch to cruelty-free beauty products, too.
Cruelty-Free Beauty Brands to Try For Yourself
- Bare Minerals – I use the loose powder and like how light it feels on my skin.
- E.L.F. – I’m currently transitioning from Maybelline’s Matte + Poreless liquid foundation to E.L.F.’s liquid foundation ($6 at Target!).
- Buxom – For the past couple of years, I have been using Buxom’s waterproof mascara and it works really well for me.
- It Cosmetics – I use Bye, Bye, Undereye and obsessively use the Brow Power eyebrow stick.
- Kat Von D – Her lipstick line is amazing. I use her bright, cherry red lipstick.
- Kiko Milano – I found this brand while I was studying abroad in Italy. I tried all kinds of products and recommend the eyeshadow palettes.
- NARS – This is my favorite cosmetic brand, ever. I use the Radiant Creamy Concealer and blush almost every day.
- Glossier – Here’s a secret: I haven’t actually used Glossier – yet. I’m looking forward to trying the Boy Brow and Perfecting Skin Tint products.
Using cruelty-free beauty products just feels right – my conscious feels good about it. My perspective is that now, I get to have all sorts of fun discovering new beauty products for my makeup bag.
