Meet the Bloggers: Michal Greenspan of Skirts and Kicks

Ever wondered what it’s like to be a blogger? Or how it works? Welcome to the second edition of our MIM Meet the Bloggers series. Throughout the series, you’ll get a glimpse inside the inspiration, processes, favorites, and more of bloggers from all over.

Today, we’re hearing from Michal Greenspan. Michal lives in New York and (in her own words) spends way too much time (and money) in sneaker stores. When she’s not writing about a new pair of kicks she wants to add to her collection, you can find her musing about her dating life on her blog.

Inspiration and Focus

What’s your blog’s name, and what’s it about?

You can find my blog at www.skirtsandkicks.com, and as the name suggests, my content focuses on dating and sneakers.

What inspired you to start blogging, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been blogging since February 2019. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in writing. I graduated from school with a degree in creative writing, but I ended up working in real estate. I spent a very long time saying I would write on the side, but I never actually put my money where my mouth is. Recently, I decided if I want to actually be consistently writing, I would need to actually hold myself accountable. I also wanted a place where my writing could live; almost a portfolio of sorts. Skirts and Kicks was born.

Who is your blog for? Describe your ideal reader.

Both women and men in their 20s and 30s who are going through/have gone through the crazy dating scene, and of course, sneakerheads, too!

Planning Process and Advice

What does your blog planning process/routine look like?

I usually listen to music when I blog. I actually listen to music when I do most things. Usually, I write blog by blog, although sometimes I’ll write a few blogs before I post them. I usually bang out a complete blog in one sitting–my writing style has always been to write everything down upfront and then go back to edit. I’m not a very organized writer, so for me, editing happens once everything is on the page.

What advice would you give someone who is considering starting a blog or someone who is new to blogging?

Go for it! Use your own social network to spread your work, and don’t be afraid to share it. Be vulnerable and be honest. People read right through the bullshit.

Favorites

What are a few of your favorite things?

Sneakers! Seriously I have an unhealthy obsession. And peanut butter – I couldn’t live without it.

Name a few of your favorite blogs to read and why you enjoy them.

  • I love reading Man Repeller, which started out as a blog and has become a true force of writing and media on its own. I find the writing to be really well written and relatable, and I love the mix of fashion and lifestyle posts.
  • People are usually surprised by this one, but I am a HUGE fan of Barstool Sports. Their content is hilarious, honest, and totally real. They also aren’t afraid to say anything – and that kind of radical fearlessness, to just say it like it is, that’s really inspiring to me as a writer.

Who do you love following on social media?

Where can we find more of you?

I spent some time on Michal’s blog and wanted to highlight a few of her posts to check out:

That’s all for this round of Meet the Bloggers, I’ll have another one coming to ya soon!

PSIf you’re interested in starting your own blog, check out these MIM posts to help you out!
