6 Tips for Job Searching During the Coronavirus Pandemic

As some of you know, back in February I made the decision to give notice and leave my full time job due to the role not being a good fit for me. I was only in the role for 7 months when I made this decision, but early on I knew the work environment and role itself were different and less engaging than I expected it to be. I gave a month’s notice and left in mid-March, the same day that the Coronavirus Pandemic chaos truly hit Denver – what a time to leave a job! Ha.

I’m currently job searching (have progressed into a few final rounds of interviews but no offer quite yet) and wanted to share some hopefully helpful tips on how to job search during this weird time.

6 Tips for Job Searching During the Coronavirus Pandemic

  1. Get your mind right – acknowledge the current state of affairs, realize it may take more time than usual, and stay positive.
  2. Get clear on what you want to do next: what activities and experiences do you most enjoy doing? What hard and soft skills does it take? Determine 2-3 titles that you’d like to pursue.
  3. Use a Trello board to have everything in one place: mantras, prep work for your search, resources, to-do lists, and more.
  4. Research and create a list of dream companies to target and check their job listings every 2-3 days.
  5. Tailor your resume and cover letter for each role that you apply to, and acknowledge these unprecedented times in your cover letter and when following-up.
  6. Use a checklist to keep track of each job that you apply to and where you’re at in the submission process.

If you’d like the more in-depth explanation of these tips, check out my YouTube video that goes deeper into the details here.

I’m confident that we’ll get through this and find roles that are great fits for us!

My best,

Marah Elizabeth
